Africa Rising

Africa Rising
is the new book published by Gestalten in partnership with Design Indaba aiming to demonstrate how Africa is strongly growing. A new generation of men and women, composed by new talents leading their creative paths into the world, is currently developing an all new wave of creativity.

Mixing roots and innovation, this “nouvelle vague” includes design, architecture, fashion, lifestyle, art, photography and other creative fields always avoiding platitudes.

The book is curated by Robert Klanten, Sven Ehmann and Vanessa Obrecht and it looks like an inextinguishable source of inspiration.

It starts from contemporary African design which is becoming more and more globally spread.

An innovative aesthetic is originated by the combination of new resources and traditional craftsmanship able to often stimulate cross collaborations.

We should highlight Celia-Hannes’ researches focused on Cape-town, or again Yinka Ilori’s points of view on Nigerian roots expressed through her colourful chairs, and finally Stephen Burks’ projects with their references to Senegalese baskets.

At the same way, a new architectural sensitivity brings African architects to carefully consider the natural and social environment where buildings will be made. Workers and materials employed are often locals and urbanisation inducts a necessary consideration on sustenaibility and identity. The solutions that are proposed in this book are indeed globally interesting. David Adjave, Kunlé Adeyemi, MASS Design Group are writing the new contemporary history of architecture without any doubts.

Africa Rising pages tell a story that oversteps African boundaries to make the world a better place.
