Nelsa Guambe

Born in 1987, Nelsa Guambe lives and works in Maputo. She uses painting and photography as main channels for artistic expression. Her art represents ongoing African and especially Mozambican vibrations, of what inspires and awakens socially. In 2017 she Cofounded DEAL Creative Space in Maputo, which promotes local Design, Entertainment, Art and Literature. She holds a Bachelor’s degree (2010) in Public Administration and Development studies from UNISA (University of South Africa).

Nelsa’s work moves beyond the canvas to incorporate product design, where working in collaboration with a local design studio, her colorful and surreal images help to transform discarded water heaters collected from the city’s streets into distinctive functional products such as wine racks and lighting.

Nelsa Guambe is a self-taught artist and member of the Mozambican Artist Association “Núcleo de Arte” since 2010. She has had several solo exhibitions in Maputo, amongst other at the French Mozambican Cultural Center (Maputo, 2016) and has participated in group exhibitions at various institutions within and outside the country amongst others DK Contemporary gallery (Cape Town, 2016) and Pure Gold: Upcycled/Upgraded – World Touring exhibition.
