Kahindo Mateene

An alum of the Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago, Mateene draws inspiration from Congolese art and culture of her childhood as well as the culture of her adopted country of the United States and extensive travels throughout Europe, the Americas and Africa.

Born in Uganda to Congolese parents, Kahindo’s love affair for color, texture and print started at an early age having lived in several countries and exposed to different cultures. She references her African heritage and brings that multicultural sensitivity to her designs and combines it with inspiration from her travels and her surroundings in New York.

Mateene completed the Chicago Fashion Incubator at Macy’s Residence Program in 2011, and in 2013 landed a spot as a contestant on Season 12 of Lifetime Network’s Emmy-Nominated show Project Runway. Kahindo believes that when you empower women, you empower a whole society. She champions this cause through philanthropic endeavors in her native Democratic Republic of Congo.
