One of the most storied town in the wartime history of the Yorubas, the ancient city of Abeokuta still stands as a landmark of delightful wonders. Home to some of the country’s most visited tour sites, our second Ije tour will be an inquest into the sites, sights, peoples, and sound of Abeokuta. We will visit the city and examine the footprints of those who came before us while leaving behind our curiosities while taking along new memories of one of Nigeria’s oldest cultures and places.

Tour Sites– Kuti Heritage Museum, St. John’s Igbein, Ajayi Crowther Theological Institute, Olumo Rock, Centenary Hall, Kobiti Mosque & Adire Mall.
1. The Kuti museum is connected to the life and time of the family of Likoye Kuti (1820-1863) and Anne Ekidan Efupeyin,one of the first set of inhabitants of Abeokuta when it was founded in 1830.the Kuti heritage museum is at preserving the history of this family.
2. St. John’s Church Igbein, the oldest Anglican church in Abeokuta was built in 1847 built from stone and marble.
3. The centre, named after Bishop Ajayi Crowther,belongs to the Church of Nigeria. This historical building was built in 1910 at the time of Oba Gbadebo, the grandfather of the current Alake of Egbaland. The Ransome-Kuti family lived here as well as Prof. Wole Soyinka. many institutions started here, such as; Federal Advanced Teachers College, University of Lagos, Abeokuta Campus, College of Science and Technology, the last being the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta
4. The Rock is an historical monument which served as shelter and fortress for the Egba people who at 1830 had settled under the rock during the intercity wars. The rock is a monument of Faith, Unity source of strength and unfailing protection for Egba people. The highest point of the rock is 137 meters above sea level with existence of a muster tree growing for over 200 years and surrounding caves.
